Overview

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality (ABLE) is a non-profit law firm providing free civil legal services to low-income individuals and families across western Ohio. We serve more than 385,000 people in 32 counties, helping clients secure housing, healthcare, education access, and financial stability. Many clients seek help with a specific legal issue but also face challenges related to Substance Use Disorder (SUD), mental health, or other root causes of poverty. We work holistically to address these barriers so people can move toward recovery and long-term stability. Through our Medical-Legal Partnership for Children, we support families and children in rural northwest Ohio affected by SUD, ensuring they receive the care and resources needed to stay safe and healthy. We also assist agricultural workers and immigrants throughout all 88 Ohio counties, including those living with SUD who experience housing insecurity, unsafe work conditions, or limited access to treatment. By combining direct representation with community partnerships and advocacy, ABLE strengthens families, removes barriers to care, and helps people build a more stable and hopeful future. SERVICES Our organization is committed to advancing equality and justice by providing high-quality legal services to lower- and middle-income individuals. We support clients whose legal needs may intersect with mental health or SUD challenges. Our services help address issues such as housing stability, employment rights, healthcare access, and public benefits—creating pathways to security and opportunity. By removing legal barriers, we empower individuals and families to thrive and achieve lasting stability. ABLE provides legal services that promote equity and justice for individuals and families. Our offerings include: Legal counsel and advice to help clients understand and protect their rights Emergency legal assistance for urgent matters such as imminent eviction or upcoming court dates Legal education, advice, and representation for clients referred by mental health and SUD agencies Legal needs assessments for older adults and their families to ensure stability and access to resources Through these services, we work to remove barriers, safeguard rights, and empower individuals to achieve security and opportunity.
